Planes Trains and Automobiles: A Race to D.C.

What’s the fastest way to get from New York City to Washington DC? In an homage to BBC TV show TopGear, Garage 419 embarks on an epic journey, racing a Dodge Challenger SRT-8 (on a single tank of gas) against an airline shuttle and Amtrak rail. Progress is tracked by Google’s new GPS social networking tool, Google Latitude. Find out more at www.google.com/latitude.

I’m hoping to do a parody like this next year. We’re going to do a race between a dirtbike (1982 Husqvarna 250CR (see my channel) against a pickup truck (Generation 2 Dodge Dakota). The truck gets to use Highway 26 while the bike is stuck on dirt and gravel roads. The catch is, the truck has a longer distance to travel, and is restricted to the speed limit. Oh yes, that’s right, the bike will be hitting 85mph for a brief period – sans pavement. Should be a fun project.

this would be a million times better if top gear did it

So, basically if I leave in my car an hour before the train leaves, and speed the entire way without getting pulled over or hitting traffic, I’ll beat the train? Great!

im kinda mad that people are using the R/T to compare with the camaro ss and mustang. it should be the SRT8.

I figured because its a muscle car with a big engine and a lot of power, it’ll use a lot more of gas. At least 2 tanks. I could be wrong though. Either way, I’m only18 and I’m still getting one.

Why not? It’s not THAT far.. SRT8 will get upper teens on the highway, 20 is possible if you’re not an asshat.

Is Thomas Albrecht from the Netherlands? His name sounds Dutch. Anyways, the Challenger shouldn’t have an automatic. Not any car should, a manual gear makes driving so much more fun!

Form NY to DC on 1 single tank of gas?? With the SRT8? No way.

The Challenger may be the slowest of the three muscle cars, but I don’t see that stopping anyone from calling it the best.

just so everyone knows the top gear thing was a jk

  23. #23 by crnk4real on January 2, 2010 - 1:07 pm

Great note! plus the challenger is the slowest of the three classic muscles including the camaro and the new mustang gt, which has 120hp less is far better, faster, and overall built well. The new challenger was a nice thing for fanatics but needs to be more refined and tuned. Love the episodes and awesome reviews. Prefer you over TopGear

I take it matt, is not a fan of the challenger

  25. #25 by Garage419 on January 2, 2010 - 2:05 pm

The new GT500 starts at $46,500, about $4,000 more than the SRT8 Challenger.
